An unplanned pregnancy can send anyone into a panic. We know how overwhelming it can be, but don’t let fear make any decisions for you! Make sure you get all the facts on abortion in Kansas, so you can make an informed and empowered decision!

In this article, we’re exploring the Kansas abortion law and the importance of ultrasounds in your unexpected pregnancy journey!

Is Abortion Legal in Kansas? Do I Need an Ultrasound Before Abortion in Kansas?

As of March 2023, abortion is legal in Kansas for up to 22 weeks of pregnancy[1]. Additionally, you are required to receive an ultrasound before an abortion. Aside from the law, we strongly recommend an ultrasound. Keep reading to find out why!

Why Do I Need an Ultrasound?

Even if you’re considering abortion, receiving an ultrasound is a crucial step to take in your unplanned pregnancy journey! Ultrasounds determine the two key factors that will help you make a fully informed decision: gestational age and viability.

What is Gestational Age?

Gestational age refers to how far along you are in your pregnancy. This is important to know, as Kansas law prohibits abortion beyond 22 weeks (as mentioned earlier). Even if you intend to travel to another state for an abortion, the surrounding areas may have restrictions as well. Additionally, the abortion pill can’t be taken beyond 10 weeks gestation[2].

What is Pregnancy Viability?

A viable pregnancy means that the pregnancy is progressing properly and is likely to be able to be carried to term. If your ultrasound determines that your pregnancy is nonviable (for example, if there is no heartbeat), you won’t need an abortion and you can move forward with the appropriate medical care.
